Surface Finishing

Surface Finishing
for Precision
Machined Parts

Surface finishing requirements are reviewed together with material, part geometry, tolerances and functional requirements so machining and downstream processes can be coordinated as one manufacturing project.

Finishing options

Surface Finishing Options We Support

Finishing requirements vary by material, application and part geometry. The processes below can be reviewed as part of a precision manufacturing project.

  1. 01

    Anodizing

Type II and Type III anodizing can be reviewed for aluminum components requiring surface protection, wear resistance or specified appearance.

  2. 02

    Black Oxide

Black oxide can be considered for suitable ferrous components where a controlled black conversion finish is required.

  3. 03

    Electroless Nickel

Electroless nickel finishing can be reviewed for projects requiring corrosion resistance, wear characteristics or controlled surface coverage.

  4. 04

    DLC Coating

Diamond-like carbon coatings can be reviewed for suitable components where wear, friction or surface performance is important.

  5. 05

    TiN Coating

Titanium nitride coating can be considered for suitable wear components and applications requiring a hard functional surface.

  6. 06

    Nitriding

Nitriding requirements can be reviewed together with material, hardness, dimensional requirements and final machining conditions.

  7. 07

    Carburizing

Carburizing can be coordinated for suitable steel components where specified case-hardening requirements are part of the drawing.

  8. 08

    Powder Coating

Powder coating can be reviewed for suitable components requiring a durable coated surface and specified appearance.

  9. 09

    Bead Blasting

Bead blasting can be used where a controlled matte or uniform surface texture is required before delivery or subsequent finishing.

  10. 10

    Sand Blasting

Sand blasting can be considered for suitable components requiring surface cleaning, controlled roughening or preparation before a subsequent finishing process.

Common applications

Common Finishes for Aluminum & Steel

Material is one of the first factors considered when reviewing a finishing requirement. Final process selection should follow the drawing and functional requirements of the part.

Aluminum Components

Anodizing
For aluminum parts requiring corrosion protection, wear resistance or a specified appearance.
Hard Anodizing
For suitable aluminum components where improved surface wear resistance is required.
Bead Blasting
For controlled matte appearance or surface preparation.
Powder Coating
For suitable parts requiring a durable coated finish or specified color.

Steel & Stainless Components

Black Oxide
For suitable ferrous components requiring a controlled black conversion finish.
Electroless Nickel
For projects requiring corrosion resistance, wear characteristics or controlled coverage.
Nitriding
For suitable materials where surface hardness and wear performance are specified.
DLC / TiN
For selected functional components where friction, wear or surface performance requirements justify a specialized coating.

Final finishing suitability depends on material grade, geometry, tolerances and project requirements.

Performance surfaces

Coatings & Treatments for Functional Surfaces

Some components require more than appearance or corrosion protection. Wear, friction, hardness and service conditions can make the finishing process part of the functional design.

  1. 01

    DLC

Wear and friction related surface requirements can be reviewed together with the base material, geometry and critical dimensions.

  2. 02

    TiN

Hard coating requirements can be coordinated for suitable components where surface performance is important.

  3. 03

    Nitriding

Heat-treatment requirements should be reviewed together with material, hardness targets and dimensional control.

  4. 04

    Carburizing

Case-hardening requirements can be coordinated with machining sequence, drawing requirements and final verification.

Process planning

Finishing Is Part of the Manufacturing Review

Surface finishing should not be treated as an isolated final step. Material, machining allowances, masked areas, critical dimensions and inspection requirements may affect how the manufacturing process is planned.

  1. 01

    Drawing Review

Review finish specifications, drawing notes and applicable requirements.

  2. 02

    Material & Geometry Review

Confirm the material and identify features that may influence the finishing process.

  3. 03

    Machining Planning

Consider machining sequence, critical dimensions and areas affected by downstream processing.

  4. 04

    Surface Finishing

Coordinate the specified coating, treatment or surface process according to the project requirements.

  5. 05

    Final Verification

Review required dimensions, appearance and documentation before shipment.

Project requirements

What to Specify for Surface Finishing

The clearer the finishing requirements are at quotation stage, the easier it is to review manufacturing feasibility and avoid ambiguity later in the project.

  1. 01

    Base Material

Material grade and any relevant material condition.

  2. 02

    Finish or Treatment

Required coating, conversion finish, blasting or heat-treatment process.

  3. 03

    Color / Appearance

Color, appearance or cosmetic expectations where applicable.

  4. 04

    Critical Dimensions

Dimensions or tolerances that remain critical after finishing.

  5. 05

    Masked / Protected Areas

Threads, bores, sealing surfaces, electrical contacts or other areas that must remain untreated where required.

  6. 06

    Applicable Specification

Drawing notes, customer specifications or industry requirements that apply to the project.

If a finishing requirement is not yet fully defined, it can be discussed during project review.

Verification

Finishing Requirements Reviewed Before Shipment

Inspection and documentation requirements can be agreed according to the drawing and project requirements.

  1. 01Visual Finish Review
  2. 02Critical Dimension Verification
  3. 03Coating / Treatment Documentation When Applicable
  4. 04Material Documentation When Required
  5. 05Inspection Records According to Project Requirements
  6. 06Packaging Considerations for Finished Surfaces

Verification requirements depend on the specified finish, drawing and agreed project requirements.
